Supporting People Living with Breathing Difficulties
Devon Breathers is a patient-led support group helping people across Devon who live with long-term breathing difficulties and respiratory conditions. The group was formed by people who had completed pulmonary rehabilitation and experienced first-hand how exercise, education and peer support could improve quality of life.
The group supports people living with conditions including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, asthma and other respiratory problems. Its approach is simple: exercise together, support each other and enjoy the camaraderie.
More than an exercise group
For many people with a long-term respiratory condition, breathlessness can affect confidence, independence and everyday activities. Devon Breathers aims to provide a welcoming environment where members can meet others who understand what it is like to live with breathing difficulties.
The group provides opportunities for members to take part in organised exercise using equipment purchased with the help of sponsorships and grants. NHS professionals have also supported sessions, while talks and question-and-answer sessions with hospital specialists give members an opportunity to learn more about their health.
Education is an important part of the group's work. Devon Breathers shares information about respiratory health and self-management, helping members develop greater confidence in dealing with their conditions alongside professional medical care.
Local groups and community support
Devon Breathers currently has patient-led groups in Yealmpton and Kingsbridge, with further groups planned in Plymouth. The Yealmpton group meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, from 1pm to 3pm, at Yealmpton Community Centre. The Kingsbridge group meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month, from 12.15pm to 2.15pm, at Kingsbridge Care Hub.
The group has also developed strong links with local health services. Yealm Medical Centre describes Devon Breathers as a patient-led group focusing on education and rehabilitation, with healthcare professionals including a practice nurse and a consultant from the chest clinic at Derriford Hospital having attended to provide information and support.
Making a difference beyond its meetings
Devon Breathers is also involved in raising awareness of respiratory disease and supporting healthcare services. Members have shared their experiences with medical students at the universities of Exeter and Plymouth, helping future healthcare professionals understand what it is like to live with long-term respiratory conditions.
In 2025, Devon Breathers joined Cornwall Breathers in supporting patients and families at Derriford Hospital. Together, the groups presented a £2,500 donation to help improve the family room on Honeyford Ward. The donation demonstrated how patient-led groups can extend their impact beyond their regular meetings and contribute directly to the wider healthcare community.
A message of support
Perhaps one of Devon Breathers' greatest strengths is its emphasis on people supporting people. Living with a respiratory condition can sometimes feel isolating, but meeting others with similar experiences can provide encouragement, friendship and practical ideas.
Devon Breathers shows that pulmonary rehabilitation does not have to be the end of the journey. By continuing to exercise, learn and share experiences together, members can maintain the progress they have made and build confidence in managing life with a long-term breathing condition.
